Optical Microscopy

The Nikon L200 system at Soldertec is a modern research light optical microscope (LOM). The microscope can be used in reflection and transmission modes and can be used in bright field or dark field illumination modes. The instrument is also fitted with a polariser/analyser and Normanski differential interference contrast (DIC) filters. These can be used to generate different forms of contrast in the images formed that can be used to highlight, identify or characterise a wide range of features.

Light optical micrographs are captured using a digital imaging system using a Nikon DXM1200F camera. This system can be used to capture images up to 12M pixels in size. Software-control allows great flexibility in the image capture system and can be used in conjunction with the motorised z-focus stepper. This feature allows an in-focus image to be constructed of a 3-D surface from a series of partially-focused images, overcoming the traditional limitations caused by the limited depth-of-focus of light microscopy. A wide variety of image processing and metrology tasks can be undertaken by the software.
